Roger L. Depue
Roger L. Depue was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
Roger L. Depue is a criminal profiler. After a career in the FBI, he served on the panel that investigated the Virginia Tech shooting and the university's handling of it. Roger is one of the five sons of Alvoy Depue, a police officer.
Roger worked for the FBI, serving as Unit Chief for the Behavioral Science Unit at the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia, and he was a pioneer of this unit.
In 1974, he was first assigned as a Supervisory Special Agent. Roger served as a researcher and instructor up until his promotion in 1980 to the position of Chief of Behavioral Sciences.
In 1989, he retired from the FBI and founded The Academy Group.
After working in a seminary to attempt to cope with his despair from losing his wife dying of cervical cancer, he worked to try and prevent crime instead of solving it.
One of his most important contributions was to the case of James Joseph Richardson. Despite James being viewed as a victim of injustice, Roger disagreed and made a pretty compelling argument as to why he was actually guilty of murdering his seven kids.
Another important case was that of Terri Brooks. She'd been found murdered with a knife in her back and her head wrapped in a trash bag. James Keefe, her fiance, was interviewed, not interrogated. Roger applied profiling techniques and interviewed James. He found Keefe was the prime suspect, but it wasn't until many years later, when the case was reopened, that he got a confession from Terri's fiance.
Between Good and Evil: A Master Profiler's Hunt for Society's Most Violent Predators is a riveting dispatch from the front lines of a war against human predators and the powerful tale about one man's journey between redemption and darkness, with its harrowing descriptions of human depravity and a passionate call to fight against evil.
Nobody gets closer to evil than a criminal profiler trained to penetrate the minds and hearts of society's most vicious psychopaths. And nobody's a more towering figure in the world of criminal profilers than Roger L. Depue.
After he retired from the FBI, he founded this elite forensics group that consulted on high-profile cases, including the JonBenet and Martha Moxley murder cases and the Columbine school shootings. However, facing the darkest deeds humans are capable of took a horrific toll on him. After he suffered a devastating personal loss, he, while on the brink of despair, stepped away from the outside world and joined a seminary.
For three years, this was his safe haven. It was here that he counseled maximum-security inmates, rediscovered the capacity for goodness in people, and made the choice to resume his work in the world.
