Rick Riordan: TV/Movies Based on Books
After Disney bought 21st Century Fox, the rights to Percy Jackson went to Disney. The new owners decided that it would be best to start fresh and adapt Percy Jackson into a television series instead. The series stars Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. It started airing on Disney+ in December 2023.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians was made into a two-film series by 20th Century Fox. The first film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was directed by Chris Columbus and was a major commercial success with over $200 million at the box office.
The series returned in 2013 with Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters directed by Thor Freudenthal. The film was not as well received critically, but still managed over $200 million at the box office. However, that wasn't enough as plans for a third film were scrapped.
