Rick Riordan: TV/Movies Based on Books

After Disney bought 21st Century Fox, the rights to Percy Jackson went to Disney. The new owners decided that it would be best to start fresh and adapt Percy Jackson into a television series instead. The series stars Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. It started airing on Disney+ in December 2023.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians was made into a two-film series by 20th Century Fox. The first film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was directed by Chris Columbus and was a major commercial success with over $200 million at the box office.

The series returned in 2013 with Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters directed by Thor Freudenthal. The film was not as well received critically, but still managed over $200 million at the box office. However, that wasn't enough as plans for a third film were scrapped.

I forgot how good The Lightening Thief was. I feel like I’ve had a grudge against this author for several years now. It isn’t his fault. Back when the Rowling controversy was approaching a fever pitch, Riordan’s fans started encouraging readers to throw their Potter books away in favor of the Percy Jackson novels.

Naturally, as a diehard Potterhead, I took offense to those calls. In the process, my frustration with Riordan grew. But then, a few weeks ago, I found my copy of The Lightning Thief in the attic, battered and bruised but still whole.

I re-read it and remembered the joy I got from the Percy Jackson books during my childhood. Now I’m embarrassed by my imagined beef with Riordan. I think the best way to enjoy his work is to avoid Riordan’s fans.
