Richard N. Goodwin was best known as a political advisor, playwright, and author. He worked closely with Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and John F. Kennedy, and with Senator Robert F. Kennedy, to craft some of their most memorable speeches.
He was just 29 when he became an aide to President Kennedy. He would then take on several roles, from Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Assistant Special Counsel to the President.
He worked on secret diplomatic missions, including meeting Che Guevara, and on initiatives such as the concept of the “Great Society” and the “Alliance for Progress”.
Richard N. Goodwin wrote articles for publications such as Rolling Stone and The New Yorker. His memoir was the inspiration for
Quiz Show, the movie starring Rob Morrow, while he wrote the script for
The Hinge of the World, a stage play later adapted into a movie.
Among his colleagues, Goodwin had a reputation for sharp wit, versatility, and curiosity. He was known for being very comfortable moving from planning White House sinners to civil rights to diplomacy while retaining liberal ideals, humour, and energy.
He died in his home in Concord, Massachusetts, at the age of 86.
Richard N. Goodwin published a short tribute to American politician Adlai Stevenson in
The Sower’s Seed, which he published in 1965.
The work reflects on the man’s influence, work, and life in public service, even as it celebrates his character, ideas, and impact on leaders who deeply cared about the future of the United States.
According to the author, the title of the work derives from the motif of planting seeds on a farm, symbolizing how Adlai Stevenson’s efforts spread hope and ideas.
In 1988, Richard N. Goodwin published a memoir of his life in American politics titled
Remembering America.
During the 1960s, he worked closely with Lyndon B. Johnson and John F. Kennedy and witnessed the Vietnam War and the passage of civil rights laws, among many other significant events.
It chronicles his role in writing the influential speech for voting rights titled “We Shall Overcome”, his role in the 1968 anti-war campaigns, and his clandestine diplomatic meetings with leaders such as Che Guevara.
It is a showcase of both the deep disappointments and great victories of the 1960s.
In 1998, Richard N. Goodwin published a retelling of the conflict between Pope Urban VIII and Galileo Galilei, the scientist, titled
The Hinge of the World.
The work shows how the scientist’s ideas about a concentric Earth went against traditional church beliefs. The two men had once been friends but were ultimately pulled apart by the struggle between faith and science.
Galileo does his best to show the Pope that his discoveries are true, while the Pope will protect the authority of the church at any cost. Soon, their intellectual and personal fight turns into a struggle between religion and reason that would define history.
