Richard Evelyn Byrd (Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr.) was born on October 25th, 1888. Richard passed away March 11th, 1957 at 68 years old. Richard Evelyn Byrd was born in Winchester, VA, USA. Byrd attended Virginia Military Institute, the University of Virginia, and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Richard Evelyn Byrd was an American naval officer, pioneering aviator, organizer of polar logistics, and polar explorer. Aircraft flights that he served as navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, part of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. He’s also known for discovering Mount Sidley, which is the largest dormant volcano in all of Antarctica.
Richard claimed that he was the first to ever reach both the South and North Poles by air. But there’s controversy attached to whether or not he was actually the first person that reached the North Pole. It’s typically believed that the distance he claimed to fly was much longer than the possible fuel range of his airplane.
Richard received the Medal of Honor, which is the United States Armed Forces’ highest military decoration, as well as the Navy Cross, the second highest honor for valor given by the US Navy.
He went to the Virginia Military Institute for 2 years and transferred to the University of Virginia, before financial circumstances inspired him to start over and take an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he got appointed midshipman on May 28, 1908.
He graduated from the Naval Academy on June 8, 1912 and was commissioned ensign in the US Navy. He got assigned to the battleship USS Wyoming in June of 1912. He got his first letter of commendation during his service in the Caribbean Sea, and later got a Silver Lifesaving Medal, for twice plunging fully clothed to rescue a sailor that fell overboard. He transferred in 1914 to the armored cruiser USS Washington and served in Mexican waters in June after the American intervention in April
Little America: Aerial Exploration in the Antarctic, The Flight to the South Pole is the story of his first journey through Antarctica and the founding of this series of bases and camps referred to as “Little America”. Through the years, many similar areas were developed as research areas and camps on his Antarctic missions, however the founding of “Little America” required some great leadership and courage.
In awe of such unforgiving landscape, he eagerly met its treacherous challenges. He outlines the blueprint for the first mission to Antarctica and provides a glimpse into the obstacles that he and his team overcame at the end of the world.
Transported off on Byrd’s classic exploration by air, land, and sea to the farthest reaches of the globe. As companions on his journeys, modern audiences experience the polar landscape through his own doubts, struggles, revelations, and triumphs and share in the excitement of such timeless adventures.
