Richard Belzer

Richard Belzer (Richard Jay Belzer) was born on August 4th, 1944. Richard passed away February 19th, 2023 at 78 years old. Richard Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. Belzer attended Dean College.

Richard Belzer was an author, actor, and comedian. Richard was best known for his performance as BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/sergeant and investigator John Munch, a role he played for 23 years on Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and many guest appearances on other series.

He has described his mom as being frequently physically abusive, and he declared that his comedy career had begun when attempting to make her laugh in order to distract her from abusing both him and his brother.

After Richard’s first divorce, he moved to New York City, moving in with Shelley Ackerman (a singer), and started working as a stand up comic at Catch a Rising Star, Pips, and The Improv. Richard participated in the Channel One comedy group which satirized TV and became the basis for The Groove Tube, which he played the co-star of the ersatz TV show “Dealers”.

He was the warm up comedian for Saturday Night Live and made three guest appearances between 1975 and 1980 on the show. Belzer also opened for Warren Zevon during his tour supporting his Excitable Boy album.

During the late 70s and early 80s, he became an occasional film actor. There is a short skit of a younger Richard that can be found on Sesame Street in a 1978 episode.

When he auditioned for Homicide, the show’s Executive Producer, Barry Levinson, said he was a lousy actor when he read lines for the series’ first episode. Barry told him to take some time to reread and practice the material some more, then read it again. At the second reading, Levinson claimed Belzer was still terrible, but that he found confidence in his performance.

In UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don’t Have to Be Crazy to Believe, the distinguished statesman of stand up comedy tackles a few of the largest cover ups and conspiracies this side of Roswell.

Exactly what is it that they do not want you to know about the Kennedy assassination, what the American astronauts found on the moon, and Area 51? the unexplained crash and that mysterious “face” on Mars? The connection between the US space program and the Nazis? Evidence of extraterrestrial experimentation?

Finally, a single lone “nut” exposes the conspiracy to keep the conspiracies as a dirty little secret, standing up to all the shadowy forces which have us all believe that Oswald was acting all alone, that the lights in the sky are just weather balloons, and that fluoridated water is good for you.
