Rachel Ashwell is primarily known as an interior designer, entrepreneur, and author who popularized the shabby chic aesthetic.
It all began when she was a teenager who was the daughter of a father who dealt with rare second-hand books and a mother who was a restorer of antique teddy bears and dolls. Following her father around, she dropped out of school at 16 and began frequenting outdoor markets in London to sell antiques.
When she was older, Rachel Ashwell started doing photo shoots and TV commercials as a prop and wardrobe stylist. In the 1980s, she moved to the US and opened her first store in 1989 in Santa Monica and this was the beginning of her career.
Having grown up going to flea markets as a kid and teenager, she started going to them to find items for her Santa Monica-based home furnishings company. Ashwell was so good at finding very good items that it was not long before she could hardly keep anything in stock.
Between 1999 and 2003 she was the host of
Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic on
Style Network and on
E! By 2010, she had become a big name and was credited for turning shabby into chic that she was featured on Oprah.com’s list of top 10 interior designers. In addition to her three stores in London, Los Angeles, and New York she also partners with
Target.
In 1975, Rachel Ashwell published her debut work
The Shabby Chic Home.
In this book, she walks her readers through the process of renovating her home. She documents everything from the purchase of the gloomy and dark house from the 1920s, through its repair as she shows how to choose the paint, how to decide whether to throw out the old or buy new, and how to add elements of chic to every room of a house whether old or new.
Rachel Ashwell published her second novel
Shabby Chic in 1996. At its core, this is a guide to tag sale treasures, home furnishings, flea market finds, and flower arrangements. Ashwell shows how to create the aura of crafted indifference, cushy comfort, and old money without breaking the bank.
Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic Treasure Hunting and Decorating Guide was published in 1998. In this work, she takes you on a tour of antique malls and flea markets to show how a little imagination taste, ingenuity, and work can make trinkets into treasures for decorating the home.
