When I read State Secrets, I thought I was witnessing something new. After telling crime fiction stories over the course of 27 books, I thought that Quintin Jardine was finally turning his attention to political thrillers with the 28th novel in the series. But I was wrong.
I went from book 28 to book 2, and, to my surprise, Skinner’s Festival was more of a political thriller than a crime fiction novel. Now I understand why interest in this series has remained strong even though it has run for so long.
Quintin is not afraid to break the rules of the genre. On another note, I’ve yet to read this series in order. I keep jumping from one random novel to another. And you know what? It doesn’t affect my enjoyment. I can tell that Skinner has been through a lot. But I don’t need to know every element of his backstory to appreciate the individual books. I like that.
