I know J.K Rowling was unhappy when the public learned that she was behind the Robert Galbraith pen name. But I think it did her reputation a world of good.
A decade ago, I would have dismissed her as a one-hit-wonder. Yes, Harry Potter is amazing, but that is just one seven-book series. For all anybody knows, Rowling simply got lucky. She stumbled across an incredible concept and turned it into the world’s biggest fantasy franchise.
Those were my thoughts before I read the Cormoran Strikes series. If I weren’t such a massive Potter fan, I would have hailed Cormoran Strike as the superior series. I’ve watched and read so many mystery novels and police procedurals that I thought I was done with that entire genre.
Then I read the Strike books and couldn’t believe how compelling they were. Now, we need Rowling to try her hand at science fiction. If she can create a successful series in each genre, she may go down in history as the greatest author of all time.
If you haven’t yet tried a Cormorant Strike novel, do yourself a favour and pick up The Cuckoo’s Calling, the first in the series. You’ll be hooked as I am. I love seeing how the Robin Ellacott and Cormorant Strike relationship has evolved over the series. You will too.
Although I think her characters are terrific (despite her penchant for quite odd names) these books need editing. She can spin a plot well, but lards the books with far too many additional threads and characters. Also, I detest her use of phonetic spelling to reflect speech patterns. I read the books, I enjoy them, but I prefer the television series which has to be more concise.
I really enjoy these books! Have been reading all of her books for so long! She really is a talented author!
Just finished a running Grave. Another great read as I just love long intertwined stories.
I see a few interesting titles. I also noticed that the top 10 list of authors present a few new ones from previous weeks. That is good to see.
About done with the Cuckoo and it isn’t too bad. I had a difficult time relating to the paparazzi and such.
