Prince
Prince (Prince Rogers Nelson) was born on June 7th, 1958. Prince passed away April 21st, 2016 at 57 years old. Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
Prince was an American dancer, guitarist, producer, songwriter, singer, and performer considered one of the most talented artists of his generation. Similar to Stevie Wonder, he could perform on just about any instrument he needed.
He began his recording career playing soul and funk for Black audiences, and his early music had a lot of influence from contemporary music. He would later incorporate a variety of influences into his music, from hip-hop, jazz, The Beatles, heavy metal, and punk.
Interested in music from a very early age, he began dabbling in the piano when he was just 7, and by the time he was 14, he was a master at both the drums and the guitar.
In 1983, his song
Little Red Corvette became his first crossover hit, as it would become huge on MTV at a time when there were hardly any Black artists on TV. However, it was with the 1984-released album
Purple Rain that he would become a Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist.
Prince became known for lyrics that addressed desire and sexuality with imagination and frankness. He loved to use his song lyrics and titles to explore oddities and avoid constrictions of convention. Prince sometimes included strong religious impulses in his work, gathering inspiration from African American sacred erotic experiences.
For much of his career, he was a prolific songwriter, and this led to a clash with his record label, which had a policy of one album a year for every artist. Prince would later leave Warner Brothers and sign with NPG, where he believed he could release as much music as he desired.
In his later years, Prince tried to market his work through private arrangements with retail chains and through the Internet, so that he would not be controlled by large record companies.
Prince died of a fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park estate in 2016.
His memoir
The Beautiful Ones was published in 2019, three years after his death. It is an intimate look into his artistic philosophy, creative journey, and life that he never finished, as death came first. The completed version combines Prince’s reflections, personal photographs, and handwritten notes that offer perspectives into the artist’s mind and life. It is the story of how he became Prince, then created an artistic vision and a personal life before the fame and hits that would define the man.
