Penelope’s books are interesting. I don’t say that about many authors. My favorite writers have entertained me. Some of them make me cheer. Others make me cry. But few of them write interesting fiction.
I wouldn’t call serious authors that produce heavier fiction ‘Interesting.’ They are deep and engaging, but that is not the same as ‘Interesting.’ Penelope’s work is interesting because most of the books on this list surprised me.
They were not what I expected. Penelope is not afraid to create characters that are wholly unlikeable. And yet, that unlikability has never affected my enjoyment, which speaks volumes about Penelope’s abilities as a storyteller. She keeps you hooked.
Only two authors have given me such an emotional gut-punch from their storytelling. Penelope Douglas destroyed me with Credence and Birthday Girl. Went through a lot of tissues. Well done 👏
