For a book addict like me finding a great series is akin to stumbling upon a out of business sale or an ice cream shop with 24 flavors.

I was introduced to Paul Doiron by my wife who is notoriously difficult to please when it comes to any literary work. She had heard of the Mike Bowditch series on social media and after reading it recommended it to me.

With her recommendation saying the lead was something like Joe Pickett of the CJ Box series, I knew I had to read the novel and the series as she said it only got better with each subsequent novel.

My favorite so far has been Dead by Dawn which is something of combination of MacGyver’s inventiveness and Jack London style peril. It also has something of The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell.

I am still new to the Paul Doiron train. So far, I like what I’ve seen. I finished ‘The Poacher’s Son’ a few days ago. I only bought it because it won a Barry Award.

Even though I know nothing about the Barry Awards and their value, I wanted to see whether Doiron’s debut novel deserved the accolade. The fact that I enjoyed it surprises me because it was a whodunit about a man trying to prove that a murder suspect was framed.

I have read so many novels of that ilk that I genuinely expected to hate ‘The Poacher’s Son.’ But Doiron won me over, primarily because of the focus he placed on the father/son relationship. He has potential.

Paul’s book for me were like finding buried treasure. I loved the crime storylines, but nature and the outdoors being intertwined make the books a delight. As a birdwatcher, I was fascinated with the authors descriptions of bird calls and habits of the forest animals.

I can’t remember where I heard of the Mike Bowditch series…possibly on Facebook. Anyway I started reading them in the last year or so and really enjoying them. Lately, I’ve been watching the North Woods Law on Discovery Plus and I’m catching so many place name in Maine that I have heard about in the books.
