Pat Benatar
Pat Benatar (Patricia Mae Andrzejewski) was born on January 10th, 1953 and is currently 73 years old. Pat Benatar was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Benatar attended Stony Brook University.
Pat Benatar is a legendary singer-songwriter who has sold more than 36 million albums worldwide and won four Grammy Awards. She also boasts 15 US
Billboard Top 40 singles. Benatar became one of the most iconic rock musicians of the late 1970s and 1980s, dominating the airwaves during that era.
Pat grew up on Long Island, New York, where her passion for music was inspired early on by her mother, Millie, a trained opera singer. In high school, she became a key member of the music department, honing her skills and nurturing her dream of becoming a renowned performer.
In 1971, despite her talent and ambition, she married her high school boyfriend, Dennis Benatar, and became a homemaker. The couple moved to Virginia, where Dennis was stationed as a soldier. Inspired by a Liza Minnelli concert in Richmond, Pat decided to quit her job as a bank teller and pursue her dream of singing.
She began performing at a Holiday Inn and worked as a singing waitress at the nightclub Roaring Twenties. While there, she met pianist Phil Coxon and formed a duo, which eventually grew into a 10-member lounge band called Coxon’s Army. The band gained local popularity and even appeared in an unaired PBS special. Its bassist, Roger Capps, later became the original bass player for the Pat Benatar Band.
Pat’s first single, “Day Gig,” marked the beginning of her music career. After moving back to New York with Dennis following his discharge from the Army, she performed at amateur nights, including one at Catch a Rising Star. Her rendition of Judy Garland’s “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody” earned her a callback from club owner Rick Newman, who became her manager. For the next three years, she performed regularly at the club, building her reputation.
After divorcing Dennis, Pat caught the attention of a producer from
Chrysalis Records, who signed her to the label. Her life changed when she met guitarist Neil Giraldo. Together, they released her debut album,
In the Heat of the Night, in 1979, which was a success. However, it was her second album,
Crimes of Passion, that solidified her status as rock royalty. The record went platinum and produced three major hits, catapulting her career to new heights.
Halloween 1977 became a defining moment for her stage persona. Dressed as a character from
Cat Women of the Moon, she entered a costume contest at Cafe Figaro in Greenwich Village. Later that night, she performed at Catch a Rising Star still in costume, creating a memorable impression.
Pat’s career includes four Grammy wins, eight No. 1 singles, and 10 platinum albums. Despite her success tapering off in the 1990s, her influence remains significant.
In her memoir,
Between a Heart and a Rock Place, Pat offers an intimate look at her extraordinary career, candidly sharing the challenges of breaking into the male-dominated world of rock. She reflects on her early days in New York’s club scene, her rise to headlining sold-out arenas, and her fight to maintain her identity in an industry that often tried to mold her into a sex symbol.
The book highlights her partnership with Neil Giraldo, who played a key role in blending her classically trained voice with his sharp guitar riffs to create her unique hard rock sound. Pat’s journey is an inspiring tale of perseverance, talent, and staying true to oneself in a challenging industry.
