Mary Poppins was turned into a film by Walt Disney Pictures in 1964. The book was based on Travers original novel, but it did borrow some elements from the second book in the series as well. The film is considered one of the all-time Disney classics. Julie Andrews starred as the title character while Dick Van Dyke starred as Bert. The film was the highest grossing of the year and was nominated for 13 Academy Awards. It won five of them, including Best Actress and Best Original Music Score. The film is considered to be Walt Disney's greatest achievement, but it wasn't easy. Disney's kids loved the novels and he wanted to purchase them, but Travers was not interested. It took over twenty years of visits and convincing before the author finally agreed to the deal. Travers agreed, but she didn't approve of the final film and wouldn't allow any further adaptations of her series. The relationship between Disney and Travers with him convincing her to allow him to adapt it was eventually made into its own movie, 2013's Saving Mr. Banks. A sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns was finally made in 2018, starring Emily Blunt as Mary.
