I bought The Code of the Woosters in eBook format, and it was littered with spelling errors. Fortunately, a friend had a better version that allowed me to appreciate Wodehouse’s humor fully.
I have just started my journey through the author’s bibliography. This is one of those cases where the writer might be more fascinating than his stories. I started researching the author a few weeks ago, and I cannot bring myself to stop.
I don’t know any other prominent authors who were imprisoned by the Germans during the Second World War. They probably exist, but Wodehouse is the only one I’ve discovered thus far, and he hasn’t disappointed. Based solely on what I read in The Code of the Woosters, his command of the English language is incredible. I can’t wait to read more stories from Wodehouse.
P. G. Wodehouse is an extraordinary author, the fact that he wrote “light” comic novels and short stories should not conceal the fact that he was a craftsman of exquisite skill. He worked fantastically hard to bring off effects of the utmost lightness and grace. My “gateway drug” was the Jeeves short stories, which are masterpieces of inventive humor; but really everything he’s done is superb and worth your time.
