Octavia E. Butler (Octavia Estelle Butler) was born on June 22nd, 1947. Octavia passed away February 24th, 2006 at 58 years old. Octavia E. Butler was born in Pasadena, California, USA. Butler attended Pasadena City College where she received an A.A., California State University, Los Angeles and The University of California, Los Angeles.

Octavia E. Butler was the author of the Patternmaster series which consists of 5 novels. The Patternmaster series started in 1976 with the novel Patternmaster. The most recently released novel in the Patternmaster series was Clay's Ark which was released in 1984. There are no upcoming novels for the Patternmaster series.

Octavia E. Butler (Octavia Estelle Butler) also wrote the Xenogenesis series which has 3 books including Dawn and Adulthood Rites.

I can’t believe Octavia flew under my radar for so long. I discovered her after a classmate introduced me to the Xenogenesis books. I can’t think of a more powerful literary symbol. First of all, she was born in 1947, which gives you an idea of the kinds of racial barriers she had to overcome as a budding science fiction author.

The fact that she had crippling shyness is the icing on the cake. I want to say that we all understand the difficulties she faced. But let’s be honest. Most people don’t know what paralyzing shyness feels like.

I do. And learning that Octavia overcame such an overwhelming obstacle to succeed in the literary arena has given me the strength to pursue my own dreams. Seriously, this woman deserves more attention from mainstream audiences.
