I can’t believe Octavia flew under my radar for so long. I discovered her after a classmate introduced me to the Xenogenesis books. I can’t think of a more powerful literary symbol. First of all, she was born in 1947, which gives you an idea of the kinds of racial barriers she had to overcome as a budding science fiction author.

The fact that she had crippling shyness is the icing on the cake. I want to say that we all understand the difficulties she faced. But let’s be honest. Most people don’t know what paralyzing shyness feels like.

I do. And learning that Octavia overcame such an overwhelming obstacle to succeed in the literary arena has given me the strength to pursue my own dreams. Seriously, this woman deserves more attention from mainstream audiences.
