Nujood Ali
Nujood Ali was born in 1998 and is currently 27 years old. Nujood Ali was born in Yemen.
Nujood Ali is the youngest ever divorcee, having obtained a divorce when she was just 10 years old. She became a central figure in Yemen’s movement against child marriage and forced marriage.
She was just 9 years old when her parents arranged for her to marry Faez Ali Thamer, a man that was in his thirties at the time. Nujood was regularly beaten by her in-laws and raped by her husband, and she escaped just 2 months after the wedding on April 2, 2008.
Nujood was advised by her dad’s second wife, and went right to the Yemeni court, alone, in order to get a divorce. After waiting just half a day, she was noticed by Mohammed al-Gnadha, a judge, who took it upon himself to grant her temporary refuge, and had her husband and dad both taken into custody.
Her lawyer argued that Nujood’s marriage violated the law, since her husband raped her, as families would stipulate that sex with young brides was forbidden until they were considered ‘ready’. Nujood rejected the judge’s proposal that she resume living with her husband after a break lasting 3 to 5 years. She was granted a divorce on April 15, 2008.
She returned to school that fall after rejoining her family in a suburb of Sana’a. She planned on becoming a lawyer.
She got married in 2014 and has two daughters of her own. Her education never advanced like it was originally supposed to. Her family is said to have pressured her into demanding more money. This is after her dad spent money for 2 wives for himself, and arranged for Nujood’s younger sister to marry an older man.
Glamour designated her as their 2008 Woman of the Year, and associated Nujood’s lawyer (Shada Nassar) the same tribute. Her courage was praised by prominent women including Condoleezza Rice and Hilary Clinton.
I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced: A Memoir was published in 2010 and is an unforgettable tale of triumph, tragedy, and courage. Nujood’s childhood came to an abrupt end in the year 2008 as her dad arranged for her to marry this man three times her age. Nujood, with harrowing directness, tells about the abuse at her husband’s hands and about her daring escape.
Nujood, with help from local advocates and the press, she obtained her freedom, which is an extraordinary feat in Yemen, where just about half of all the girls get married under the legal age. Her brave defiance of both Yemeni customs and her own family has inspired other young girls in the Middle East to challenge their own marriages.
