Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World shines new light on questions like what is the point of human existence? What do we do all day? What gives meaning to life? The book also gives us glimpses of a different sort of existence, which may just be our own in the future.
In a previous book Nick wrote, he focused on what could happen if AI development went wrong. However what if things went right?
Suppose we develop superintelligence safely, govern it well, and then make some good use of the near magical technological powers and cornucopian wealth that such tech could unlock. If such a transition to the machine intelligence era goes well, human labor then becomes obsolete. We’d thus enter into a condition of post-instrumentality, in which all our efforts aren’t needed for any practical purpose. Additionally, at technological maturity, human nature then becomes totally malleable.
