In 1997, Nicholas Dawidoff published In the Country of Country, in which he explores the founding musicians in traditional country music.

He details the profiles of several artists such as Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, and Jimmie Rodgers as he looks into how the cultural environment and personal circumstances shaped their music. He goes deep into the backroads and rural communities, which were the birthplace of country music.

The work is all about emotional and authentic classic country as opposed to the modern, commercialized version it has become.
