In his book
The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World, Niall Ferguson argues that the financial system we live with today is the result of thousands of years of gradual development. He uses the metaphor of evolution and compares money to living organisms that change, adapt, and survive if they are the “fittest.”
According to him, money has transformed step by step into new forms, with each stage meeting human needs more effectively and giving societies an advantage over others.
Ferguson describes this financial journey in six stages. First came banks, born from the simple need to lend and borrow once money was used to measure value. Then came bonds, as governments realized they could use credit markets to raise funds, particularly for wars.
By the seventeenth century, stock markets allowed corporations to raise money from investors, further expanding financial power beyond governments. Insurance followed, offering ways to spread and manage risk, which gave businesses and individuals greater security.
Later, real estate and more complex financial tools such as futures and options helped households borrow, invest, and become property owners. Ferguson argues that these developments supported the growth of property-owning democracies, which he sees as especially stable.
The final stage, in his view, is imperialism and globalization. In societies that combined banks, bonds, stocks, insurance, and property ownership, economies grew stronger and more competitive. This gave Western nations a clear advantage, which they carried into the world through empire and, later, globalization. Ferguson presents this spread as not only inevitable but also beneficial, helping to advance science, law, and prosperity across the globe.
In his other book,
Imperialism: The Darwinian Justification, Ferguson expands on this evolutionary view. He describes financial history as a Darwinian struggle in which institutions compete like species for survival.
He considers innovations like mutations, some spreading widely, others fading away. He even applies ideas such as “drift” and “co-evolution” to explain how banks, markets, and corporations developed alongside one another. The “fittest” institutions, in his view, are those that replicate and adapt best, ensuring their survival.
This perspective, however, is not without problems. By portraying the rise of Western finance and empire as natural evolution, Ferguson makes it seem inevitable and, more importantly, beneficial.
In the end,
The Ascent of Money is both an engaging story of how finance shaped the modern world and a subtle justification of Western dominance.
