Mort Crim is a retired broadcast journalist and author.
He joined Channel 4 in Detroit in 1978, and was with the station for 19 years before he retired from anchoring TV newscasts in 1997. Before that, he served as an anchor at WHAS-TV in Louisville (from 1969 to 1972), KYW-TV in Philadelphia (1972-1977), and WBBM-TV in Chicago (1977-1978).
Mort was considered to be a top candidate by Roone Arledge (ABC News president) to become a co-anchor for ABC’s
World News Tonight newscast back in 1978.
In 1984, he hosted this technology program on PBS, called
New Tech Times.
Mort’s also a founder of this Detroit area integrated marketing agency, known as Mort Crim Communications, Inc. He served as a spokesman for Majic Window Company, located in Wixom, Michigan, and for a number of years he was featured in TV commercials for the company.
He anchored the ABC program
News Around the World in the late 60s and early 70s along with numerous other hourly newscasts.
Mort had four syndicated editorial and news features for radio. One Moment Please, News You’ll Care About, Second Thoughts, and American Spirit. Mort had also substituted for Paul Harvey’s daily radio programs.
Mort read the eulogy at the memorial of Jessica Savitch, a colleague, following her death in 1983. They had co-anchored together while at KYW-TV in Philadelphia during the mid-70s.
Anchored: A Journalist’s Search for Truth has been honored as a notable 100 Book in the 2021 Shelf Unbound Best Indie Book Competition.
Mort’s reported on major conflicts around the world for over 4 decades and was a major inspiration for Will Ferrell’s role in
Anchorman. His memoir takes readers behind the camera in order to show exactly what life was like when the local anchorman got just as revered as the professional athlete, and just as overpaid. This was a glamorous life, working alongside some journalism legends, like David Brinkley, Ted Koppel, Dan Rather, and Walter Kronkite.
Crim, son of an evangelical minister in a conservative church, suffered his first crisis of faith when he was 15. Despite his nagging questions, he followed his dad’s path eventually into ministry. The more he dived into the Bible, the more his faith was shaken. Unable to defend some things he was unsure of from the pulpit, he left the ministry to begin a career in journalism, determined to pursue the truth.
Mort’s journey for truth is going to resonate for anybody raised in a cocoon of certainty which they felt compelled to question.
