Michaela Coel is best known as a British-Ghanaian producer, actress, director, and screenwriter. Over the years, she has made her name for her advocacy for creative autonomy and innovative storytelling.

She was brought up by her Ghanaian immigrant mother in Tower Hamlets in London. Growing up, she had to contend with being her primary school’s only Black student. Her experiences during this time would be an inspiration for some of her later works.

Her first work was Chewing Gum Dreams, a one-woman play that garnered much critical acclaim, that it was adapted into Chewing Gum, the E4 sitcom. The latter earned Michaela Coel two BAFTA Awards.

In 2020, Michaela Coel made use of her personal experience with sexual assault to create I May Destroy You, the series in which she was also the writer, co-director, and a lead star. The series was praised for its insights into trauma and consent and was the recipient of several awards.

Outside of television, Coel is a notable actor who has been in several noteworthy productions. One of the most prominent of these was when she was cast in the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a member of the Dora Milaje named Aneka.

Coel has become a widely respected figure in entertainment, and in 2022, she was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, while earlier on in 2020, she was named on the list of 100 Most Influential People by Time.

Misfits: A Personal Manifesto is a work that Michaela Coel published in 2021. For the most part, it is a work in which she reflects on her experiences navigating the white television industry as a Black woman.

Coel emphasizes themes of marginalization, the importance of having a unique perspective, and the challenges of being creatively autonomous. Making use of the moth metaphor, she draws an illustration of enduring discomfort to achieve authenticity and strength.

She asks her readers to find empowerment in individuality, advocate for transparency, and sometimes defy societal norms to showcase their unique voices.
