Michael J. Durant

Michael J. Durant (Michael John Durant) was born on July 23rd, 1961 and is currently 64 years old. Michael J. Durant was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, United States. Durant attended Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University where he received a BS, MBA.

Michael J. Durant is an American veteran, former Army pilot, businessman, author, and political candidate. He is best known for being involved in the "Black Hawk Down" incident while serving as a U.S. Army pilot. In 2022, he ran in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate in Alabama but was unsuccessful.

In 2003, Durant wrote In the Company of Heroes, a book that tells the story of his military service and his time in captivity.

In the Company of Heroes tells the full, untold story behind the film Black Hawk Down. Durant was the pilot whose name became known around the world after his helicopter was shot down during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. News broadcasts in October of that year showed his battered face as he was dragged through the streets, an image that shocked America. While the movie ends with his captivity, this book continues the story, explaining what happened to him and how he made it out alive.

Durant pays tribute to the men who served with him in Somalia. He credits his survival to Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart, two commando sergeants who came to his aid and were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for their sacrifice.

The book also offers a deeper look at life inside U.S. Special Forces. Durant explains that in elite units like the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, soldiers often serve together for far longer than in other military organizations. He spent 13 years with the same group, building bonds that went far beyond Somalia.

The creation of the book itself also has unique behind-the-scenes details. Durant had to purchase the rights to use photos of himself, since many of the widely circulated images from his captivity were copyrighted. He was also pleased that the rock band AC/DC allowed him to use the lyrics to one of their songs in the book free of charge.

In the Company of Heroes is an extraordinary account of survival, sacrifice, and brotherhood. It offers both a personal perspective on a historic event and a tribute to the men who gave their lives to save a fellow soldier.
