Martin Walker’s food descriptions are tremendous and I absolutely love all of the references to the Dordogne, and these books do a fantastic job of taking readers on a virtual tour of this spectacular locale.
It has been wonderful getting to know Bruno after reading a few of the novels, and love being along for the ride for his various adventures. The man is magnificent and can fit a lot into each day. A full time job, horses, tennis and rugby coaching, events management, cooks fabulous multi-course dinner parties, romances women, tends a beautiful veggie garden, and finds time to read still.
I love Bruno. I know that Walker writes crime fiction. And the books definitely fit the genre. But something about the series reminds me of the cozy mystery genre. I think it’s the setting.
Cozy mysteries win readers over by creating the sort of town they would love to inhabit. Walker does the same. The French countryside seems like such a lovely place. And Bruno is an incredible protagonist.
Walker is not afraid to explore complex subjects. And in all honesty, the Bruno books would be out of place in the cozy mystery genre. But Walker has a narrative style that tends to put me at ease. And usually, that only happens with cozy mysteries.
I love Martin Walker’s Bruno. I feel like I’m in the South of France his descriptions are so wonderful. I can’t wait to get there, I think because of the Bruno books I will feel like I am “coming back”. I just purchased the cookbook and it is beautiful!! I gave one to a friend and she immediately bought his first Bruno book.
Looking forward to the next Bruno book!
