Mizushima’s novels work because they have something for everyone. If you want deftly written mysteries, each book has plenty of those. If you prefer detailed stories that delve into the minutiae of detective work, Mizushima doesn’t disappoint in that area.
If you want interpersonal drama, Cole and Mattie’s relationship will keep you engaged. Though, if you think about it, most well-written mysteries and thrillers will give you all these elements and more. The one aspect I haven’t seen in any other book is the dog.
Mattie has a canine partner. I couldn’t believe how much time Mizushima spent explaining the training procedures of K-9 partners, not to mention the work Robo does and how he does it. I don’t like dogs. But I wouldn’t mind reading an entire novel solely dedicated to Robo.
Really enjoy this series. I read several books with K-9 characters and appreciate the time the authors spend explaining the training it takes for the partners to work together.
