Marcia Angell was born on April 20th, 1939 and is currently 85 years old. Marcia Angell was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. Angell attended Boston University School of Medicine where she received an M.D. She also attended James Madison University.
Marcia Angell is an author, physician, and the first woman to ever serve as editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine.
She joined
The New England Journal of Medicine in 1979. She became Executive Editor in 1988, and then served as interim Editor-in-Chief from 1999 until mid 2000.
Marcia was offered the role on a permanent basis, however she turned it down explaining that she was retiring so she could write a book about alternative medicine.
After she completed her undergraduate studies in mathematics and chemistry at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, she spent one year as a Fulbright Scholar studying microbiology in Frankfurt, Germany. After she got her MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1967, she trained in both anatomic pathology and internal medicine and is a board certified pathologist.
She is a frequent contributor to both popular media and medical journals on a wide range of topics, especially health policy, medical ethics, the interface of medicine and law, the nature of medical evidence, and end-of-life healthcare.
Marcia is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society, the Association of American Physicians, and is a Master of the American College of Physicians. Also, she is a fellow of the Committee for the Scientific Investigations of Claims of the Paranormal and is an outspoken critic of medical quackery as well as the promotion of alternative medicine.
Time magazine named her one of the 25 most influential Americans of 1997.
The Truth About the Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It is a hard hitting and bold book about Marcia’s exposing the shocking truth of what the pharmaceutical industry has become and argues for essential and long-overdue change. During her 2 decades at
The New England Journal of Medicine, she had a front row seat on the appalling spectacle of the pharmaceutical industry.
She watched the drug companies stray away from the original mission of manufacturing and discovering useful drugs. Instead they became this vast marketing machine with unprecedented control over their own fortunes. Marcia saw them gain almost limitless influence over medical education, research, and how doctors do their jobs. She sympathized while the American public, especially the elderly, struggled and increasingly failed at meeting spiraling prescription drug prices.
The American pharmaceutical industry needs to be saved, primarily from itself, and Dr. Angell proposes this program of crucial reforms, which includes restoring impartiality to clinical research and severing the ties between medical education and the drug companies.
