Louis is something of an author in the oral tradition as I find that he tells his stories like a man in the shadows if a camp fire or a troubadour.
I usually feel that Louis can perfectly fill the boots of the rugged characters he loves to write about with ease literally navigating whatever landscape he creates for his characters.
I do believe that the many personal experiences and his devotion to researching historical fact is what has made him a unique knowledgeable author with a great understanding and knowledge of events, people.
What really stands out about Lamour is that he writes about the American frontier with such clarity which is what has for years drawn me to his novels.
Every time I read a Louis L’Amour novel, I feel like I’m sitting at the feet of an elder, searching for the sage wisdom hidden within ancient tales about legendary figures performing heroic deeds.
Whenever someone argues that you can’t tell an exciting story without sex and profanity, I point them to gems like ‘Last of the Breed.’ I always scoff at people who describe certain forms of entertainment as art.
And yet, I will gladly classify L’Amour’s work as art. Because his books came out so many decades ago, they don’t feature the gimmicks many modern authors use to hide their inadequacies. This is pure, unadulterated storytelling, the equivalent of singing without an instrument.
Whenever I read a Louis L’Amour novel I feel like I’m in the Old West. And I love that feeling. That’s a sign of a great writer. And Louis L’Amour is the absolute best in the Western genre, in my humble opinion.
