BEYOND THAT, THE SEE –I don’t know what possessed me to read this book. As a sixty-five-year-old male you’d think I would steer clear of books of this kind. I normally read series books by authors like Connelly, Thor, Taylor, Mills, etc… Books with shoot’um up bang bang blood and guts.
Well, my daughter received this as an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) from BookishFirst. The synopsis sounded interesting, with it being centered around World War 2 and later. So I thought I’d give it a read. When I told my daughter I would read it after she was done, the look on her face was priceless. Like dad, you’ve got to be kidding. What have you been smoking?
Well, I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it. I was glad to read something that didn’t have bloodshed throughout the book. That does get old. I liked the way the story unfolds through the eyes of the different characters. It was interesting to see how the war (and beyond) effected two different families. Since the story goes from 1940 through 1977 it was very nice that at the bottom of the pages were the dates of the year the story was taking place. I’ve complained more than once about a story not having a timeline. I wish more authors would use this in their books.
A house on a small island plays a role in the story. The feeling the characters have for this location reminds me of the feelings my family have for a farm we grew up on. We miss the farm and wish we too could buy it back.
All in all, I would recommend this book if you were looking for something to read. A thanks to my daughter for lending me the book.
