Keith Richards is a British songwriter and guitarist best known for his work as a member of the
Rolling Stones, the British rock band. The band owed much of its success to the partnership of Mick Jagger as a songwriter and Richard’s innovativeness as a guitarist.
Richards met Jagger in primary school but they lost touch before they met by chance in a train station in Kent in 1961. It was then that they started talking about setting up a band that would eventually become the famous
Rolling Stones.
Keith Richards was known for his playing style which drew inspiration from American blues players such as Chuck Berry, the rock and roll pioneer, and Robert Johnson, who was a pioneer in the blues. He also loved to weave his lines with a second guitarist, which is something he innovated while listening to blues musicians from Chicago.
Richard and his friends formed the
Rolling Stones in 1962 and started by doing covers of old blues songs. They had their first hit in
Time is On My Side in 1964 and would go on to have many hits during the 1960s and 1970s.
Outside of his playing career, Keith Richards is also known for his struggle with drug abuse as he struggled with heroin and other illegal drugs. Despite all that, he is a father of five children, two with Patti Hansen the American model, and three with Anita Pallenberg, the Italian actress.
In 2010, Keith Richards published
Life, in which he tells the story of his life. He was inspired to pursue a career in music since he grew up obsessed with Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry records.
