Katherine M. Gehl

Katherine M. Gehl was born in 1966 and is currently 60 years old. Katherine M. Gehl was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Gehl attended The Catholic University of America where she received an M.A. in Education, Kellogg School of Management where she received an M.B.A. and.

Katherine M. Gehl is an entrepreneur, business leader, speaker, and author. She is the CEO of Venn Innovations and the founder of the Institute for Political Innovation. In 2020, she co-authored the book The Politics Industry, which brings business strategy analysis into the public sector.

Much has been said about transforming a government into more of a business, but the book takes one part of the agenda: the importance of results accountability. The book also uses an analytics model designed for businesses to analyze the public arena. The main argument here is that, at the start of the 1960 the United States had two political parties which became increasingly focused on keeping themselves in power with fewer deliverable results.

This resulted in a system where the best way for politicians to remain in power was to take ideologically extreme positions and ensure divisive issues were never eliminated.

The emphasis on two types of much-needed reforms. The first involves the restructuring of the election process by adopting non-partisan primaries, redistricting and ranked choice voting. The second reform involves restructuring the governing process by amending legislative rules. The original version of the book had another reform recommendation, which involved reforming money in politics by adopting transparency, incentivizing donors, and closing loopholes.

One of the book’s key strengths is the fact that it focuses on the industry instead of one party. Most recent books on the same theme focus on one of the parties; Katherine M. Gehl’s book reveals that when the alternate party gets into power, they do the same types of things.

While the question of executive power is not the focus of this study, it is central to the theory of change. The authors use the achievement of political outcomes that serve the public interest (and not just the interests of a few special interest groups) as a criterion for evaluating reform success. For these outcomes to be achieved, political leaders must engage in dialogue and reach agreements that the executive branch subsequently implements.

A related point is the need for greater clarity regarding the possibilities for reform in the different phases of the cycle. The book covers a period from the 1890s to the 1960s, which preceded the current phase of strong partisan polarization.

This period can be divided into two sections: a phase of intensive progressive reforms characterized by fierce partisan opposition and a second, from the 1940s to the 1960s, during which partisan polarization was low.

Overall, The Politics Industry is an entertaining work that offers concrete solutions for overcoming partisan gridlock.
