Karl Friston
Karl Friston (Karl John Friston) was born on July 12th, 1959 and is currently 66 years old. Karl Friston was born in York, England.
Karl Friston is an English theoretical neuroscientist and a key figure in brain imaging. He is the inventor behind dynamic causal modelling (DCM), parametric mapping (SPM), and voxel-based morphometry (VBM). He is also a key architect of the active inference and free energy principle and one of the most highly cited living scientists, ranked among the top ten most influential scientists.
Friston’s book
The Mathematics of the Mind-Time explores a massive puzzle: how quantum physics, complex systems, and consciousness fit together, and explains these ideas in relatively simple terms.
The author introduces the concept of “adaptive fitness,” arguing that what we call fitness is simply a creature’s traits matching its environment. In simple terms, an organism’s survival is proof that its design fits its niche. Natural selection, therefore, can be understood as an inference process in which nature selects among organisms based on how well they model their world.
Consciousness operates similarly, but instead of selecting among different organisms, it selects among different internal states within the same organism. The key difference between conscious and non-conscious beings lies in their ability to think about action and time. A conscious creature cannot predict the results of its choices unless it has a model of its own future.
An organism with a more profound sense of time is better able to imagine possible outcomes of its actions, an ability that is central to consciousness. Friston also argues that existence itself depends on reducing surprise. Living beings, therefore, act in ways that minimize uncertainty to avoid unexpected shocks in both the present and the future. Non-conscious organisms achieve this through simple mechanisms such as reflexes or evolution, while conscious beings minimize surprise by evaluating multiple imagined futures before acting.
Friston also applies this framework to mental illness, proposing that psychiatric disorders can be understood as forms of faulty inference. A “false negative” leads to conditions such as disorientation or dementia, in which the mind fails to recognize what is actually happening. Conversely, a “false positive” results in hallucinations or delusions, where the mind strongly believes something that is not real.
In the end, Friston describes life as existing within a set of states that a creature repeatedly returns to—patterns that function like attractors. This implies the presence of a Lyapunov function, aligning with the idea of negative surprise or self-evidence in information theory. Overall,
The Mathematics of the Mind-Time is a bold and intriguing attempt to explain mind, life, and consciousness through a single unifying idea.
