Her dad sent her to live with her mom and stepdad, in 1940, who her dad thought would be better able to provide for his talented daughter’s artistic training.
Having previously lived in the slums of London, Julie’s mom and stepdad moved the family to nicer surroundings as their stage careers improved. They took up residence at the Old Meuse, located in West Grove, Hersham. Her stepdad sponsored lessons for her, first at Cone-Ripman School (the independent arts educational school) and later with Madame Lilian Stiles-Allen, a concert soprano and voice instructor.
Starting in 1945, and for the following 2 years, she performed spontaneously and unbilled with her parents on stage. She stood on a beer crate in order to sing into the microphone, performing either a solo or duet with her stepdad as her mom played the piano.
When her stepdad introduced her to Val Parnell, she had her career breakthrough. She made her professional solo debut at the age of 12 at the London Hoppodrome, singing a difficult aria from
Mignon, called “Je suis Titania” as part of “Starlight Roof”, a musical revue. She played the Hippodrome for a year.
Julie, a child actress and singer, appeared in the West End in 1948 and made her Broadway debut in
The Boy Friend. She was billed as “Britain’s youngest prima donna”, she rose to prominence in Broadway musicals in
Camelot and
My Fair Lady.
She made her feature film debut in
Mary Poppins and won the Academy Award for Best Actress. The following year, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress—Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for
The Sound of Music.
