Her journey with Elsa began after her husband, George Adamson, shot a lioness in self-defense, only to discover her cubs nearby. They decided to take the cubs home, ultimately sending two to a zoo in Rotterdam and keeping Elsa. Drawing from George’s journals and her notes, Joy wrote Born Free to share Elsa’s story. Upon publication, the book reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list, aided by personal photographs of her with Elsa.

Joy devoted much of her life to raising funds for wildlife conservation, leveraging the popularity of Born Free. She authored additional works, including Living Free, which follows Elsa as a mother, and Forever Free, a story about releasing Elsa’s cubs into the wild. Following her success, Joy spent a decade traveling globally to speak on the dangers facing African wildlife.

In Born Free, Joy shares her role as a surrogate mother to Elsa, raising her as a family member while teaching her hunting skills for eventual survival in the wilderness. After three years, Joy and George released Elsa near the place they had originally found her, hoping she would integrate with other lions. Joy emphasizes the importance of a respectful human-wildlife relationship, making the book suitable for readers of all ages despite its bittersweet conclusion.

Another of her works, Queen of Shaba, chronicles her experiences with an African leopard named Penny. Following her success with Elsa’s story, Joy began studying leopards in the Shaba Animal Conservancy and took on the challenge of raising Penny. She recounts taking Penny on walks near the Shaba bushes to help her acclimate to the wilderness, though Penny’s growth led to occasional bites. The book highlights the impact humans can have on wildlife preservation and survival.

Joy also wrote her autobiography, The Searching Spirit, where she reflects on her life as both a wildlife conservationist and a woman adapting to diverse countries, cultures, and languages. She discusses her talent for painting African people and animals, her commitment to fighting wildlife abuse, and her legacy of conservation for future generations.
