Joseph Bernardin
Joseph Bernardin (Joseph Louis Bernardin) was born on April 2nd, 1928. Joseph passed away November 14th, 1996 at 68 years old. Joseph Bernardin was born in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. Bernardin attended Saint Mary Seminary where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. He also attended the University of South Carolina and The Catholic University of America.
Joseph Bernardin was famous as a Catholic Church Cardinal who was very active in initiatives of the Catholic Church in the United States. He was also one of the most respected leaders in the church in the Chicago Archdiocese.
A son of Italian immigrants, he attended Assembly Street’s
St. Peter’s Catholic Church where he was confirmed and baptized. He was just six years old when he lost his father and had to be brought up by the meager earnings of his mother who was then working as a seamstress.
Bernardin was ordained as a priest in 1952 and by 1959, he was named
Papal Chamberlain by Pope John XXIII. He would make history in 1966 when he became the United States' youngest
Auxiliary Bishop. Two years later, he was named the
National Conference of Catholic Bishops General Secretary.
By 1972, Joseph Bernardin made history once again as the youngest Archbishop in the United States when he was named
Archbishop of Cincinnati. During his time, he improved relations with Protestants and Jews, visited Hungary and Poland, and led the
NCCB.
He was also involved in campaigning against abortion and spoke on social justice, anti-poverty efforts, and nuclear disarmament. He campaigned against euthanasia and capital punishment which he called the seamless garment of life.
Bernardin became
Archbishop of Chicago in 1982 and was elevated to the
Sacred College of Cardinals in 1983. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1995 and passed on in 1996.
The Gift of Peace is a work that Joseph Bernardin published in 1997. In the book, the cardinal shares his insights and reflections including his cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the false accusation of sexual misconduct. The crux of the work is that at the end of it all, he was at peace with God and this was the peace he wanted to share with the world.
In 2001, Joseph Bernardin published the work
The Journey to Peace. This is a collection of the cardinal’s previously unpublished reflections. It shows the extraordinary compassion, wisdom, and faith of the cardinal derived from his homilies focusing on the
Stations of the Cross as the framework.
A proponent of Christian ethics, Joseph Bernardin published
The Seamless Garment in 2008. It is a collection of speeches that Bernardin gave about Christian ethics on everything from poverty, abortion, nuclear weapons, euthanasia, and the death penalty.
