Jonathan Edwards was a philosopher, revivalist preacher, and Congregationalist theologian. He is widely regarded as being one of America’s most original and important philosophical theologians. His theological work is broad in its scope, however, rooted in the Puritan heritage as exemplified in the Savoy and Westminster Confessions of Faith.
Recent studies have emphasized just how thoroughly Jonathan grounded his life’s work on conceptions of harmony, beauty, and ethical aptness, and how central the Age of Enlightenment was to his mindset. Jonathan played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and he oversaw some of the first revivals in 1733 to 1735 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts. His work gave rise to a doctrine known as New England theology.
During another revival in 1741, he delivered the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, a classic of early American literature.
Jonathan was prepared for college by his dad and older sisters, all of whom received excellent education.
He entered Yale College at the age of 12. In the year that followed, he became acquainted with John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which had a profound influence on him.
Religious Affections is a treatise that explores the nature of false and true religious emotions and experiences, as well as their role in the Christian life. Published in 1746, the piece is a response to the spiritual revival that’s known as the Great Awakening, which swept through the American colonies during the 1730s and 1740s. Jonathan, a key figure in the movement, was looking to address the concerns of critics who were questioning the legitimacy of the revival and the emotional displays that accompanied it.
He argues in the book that religious affections, or emotions, are essential to spiritual life and genuine faith. He contends that true religion isn’t just a matter of intellectual comprehension or doctrinal orthodoxy, but involves a deep and heartfelt love for God and this desire to live in accordance with His will. But he also acknowledges that not all religious emotions are genuine, and sets forth twelve criteria to help discern the authenticity of one’s religious affections.
Some key signs, he felt, include a love for God that is rooted in His beauty and holiness, a genuine humility and self-abasement before God, this change in one’s nature which leads to a life of holiness, and a willingness to suffer for the sake of God.
