I recommend John Flanagan’s work to every young reader I encounter, especially if they have the slightest interest in fantasy fiction. I was a teenager just a few years ago, and I couldn’t get enough of the Ranger’s Apprentice books.
In an industry filled with dark and gritty novels, I appreciate the fact that Flanagan is so determined to write classic sword and sorcery fantasy. He tells the sorts of stories my father read in the 1970s and 80s, the same stories he would tell me before bed.
I don’t read quite as much Flanigan these days. I don’t have the time. But the moment the opportunity arises, I intend to re-read every novel on this list.
