John Bercow
John Bercow (John Simon Bercow) was born on January 19th, 1963 and is currently 62 years old. John Bercow was born in Edgware, England. Bercow attended the University of Essex where he received a first-class honours degree in Government.
John Bercow is an ex-politician that from 2009 until 2019 served as Speaker of the House of Commons, and from 1997 until 2019 was a Member of Parliament for Buckingham.
In 1986, he was elected in the London Borough of Lambeth as a Conservative councillor and for four years he served representing the Streatham, St. Leonard’s ward. In 1987, he got appointed as the youngest deputy group leader in the United Kingdom.
In the 1987 general election in Motherwell South John was an unsuccessful Conservative candidate, and was not successful again in Bristol South in the 1992 general election. He paid £1,000 in order to charter a chopper so that he could attend the selection meetings for two safe Conservative parliamentary seats the same day (Surrey Heath and Buckingham) and got selected as the candidate for Buckingham. He’s since said that was the best £1,000 he’s ever spent.
He first was elected to parliament in the 1997 general election as the MP for Buckingham with a majority of 12,386. At the 2001 general election, he was able to increase his majority by being elected by a margin of 13,325. In 2005, this margin was 18,129.
On Michael Martin’s resignation in 2009, John stood successfully in the election to replace him as the Speaker. In the role as Speaker, he was obliged to leave the Conservative Party and stay an independent for the duration of his tenure. He was re-elected unopposed at the start of the Parliaments in years 2010, 2015, and 2017. It made him the only Speaker since World War Two to have been elected four times, and John is the first since that time to have served alongside of four different prime minsters.
John won the 2010 Stonewall Award for Politician of the Year for his work in supporting equality for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. He was given a perfect score for always voting for its position on gay equality issues between 2007 and 2009.
Unspeakable is essential listening for anybody that is interested in politics and how our democracy is (or should be) run. When he retired on Halloween 2019 as Speaker of the House of Commons, he’d become one of the most iconoclastic and recognizable figures in British politics, occupying this ringside seat during one of the most febrile periods in all of modern British history.
In this no-holds barred memoir, he offers up verdicts on the leading figures of his era. Like Boris Johnson, David Cameron, Tony Blair, and Theresa May, and carts his own political journey.
