Before he joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1992, he had wrestled in many territories, winning many championships, including numerous World Heavyweight Championships, throughout his career.
When he defeated Kerry Von Erich at Superclash III, he unified the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and the WCWA World Heavyweight Championship, and formed the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship, a title he held 28 times.
He was working as a disc jockey in Memphis, Tennessee, when his artistic ability attracted the attention of Aubrey Griffith (a wrestling promoter). They made an agreement that Jerry would give Aubrey free publicity and in exchange Jerry would get free wrestling training. He debuted in 1970 as a wrestler, winning his first championship by winning a battle royal in September of 1971,
During his feud with his mentor and trainer, Jackie Fargo, he won the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship. Jerry won the belt and the title of “King of Wrestling”.
Jerry is known for his feud with Andy Kaufman, and for playing himself in
Man on the Moon, the 1999 Jim Carrey movie about Kaufman.
In 1982, Kaufman was wrestling women as a part of skits and declared himself the Intergender Heavyweight Champion. Jerry, who took exception to these skits, wrestled Andy in Memphis. During the match, Jerry delivered 2 piledrivers to Andy, the second one after the bell rang, which sent him to the hospital, and almost broke his neck.
Lawler slapped Kaufman in the face during an episode of Late Night With David Letterman. Andy responded to this by shouting profanities and throwing his coffee at Jerry.
