I’ve almost read three-quarters of Jennifer Chiaverini’s novels. Mrs. Lincoln’s dressmaker was well woven and gave details on a period of history I had no idea about, and it’s clear the author did comprehensive research. I loved how she provided reference materials for the reader to read extensively. The Quilters apprentice was a charming story, and for my love of quilting, the book was far above perfect for me. Jennifer creates well-developed characters showing their strengths and weaknesses and how they strived to solve problems with their family members. Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule got me hooked right from the beginning with the lovable relationship of Julia and slave girl Jule.
I have come across several authors over the years that supposedly give voices to the many heroines history forgot. But most of them fall short because the stories they tell are not particularly interesting.
Chiaverini is the exception. If you had told me a year ago that I would read and thoroughly enjoy the works of a quilt-obsessed historical fiction author, I would have laughed in your face. If you had told me that I would become equally quilt-obsessed, I would have laughed even harder.
But here I am, reading The Quilter’s Apprentice for a third time. I think Chiaverini’s books work because they are deep and substantial but also easy to read.
