Jean-Dominique Bauby was a former editor-in-chief of
Elle, the glamorous fashion magazine. He was known as a charismatic, handsome, and vivacious man with many talents who was known for his love of fine food, high fashion, good banter, and fast cars.
Things changed for Jean-Dominique in 1995 when he started seeing double while on a drive with his son. He soon slipped into a coma caused by a massive stroke that left him completely paralyzed. Diagnosed with locked-in syndrome, the only part of his body that he could move was his left eyelid.
With no way of communicating, Jean-Dominique's life as a paraplegic changed when Bernard Chapuis his friend asked him to blink if he understood him and he did. Chapuis then sent him to a speech therapist who taught him how to speak by blinking his eye to an
alphabet of silence.
Now able to speak, Bauby decided to write a story about what it was like to live trapped inside his body. Working with Claude Mendibil a specialized nurse, he blinked 200, 000 times to create his novel using the methods he was taught by his therapist.
Just two days following the publication of his novel, Jean-Dominique Bauby who was suffering from pneumonia passed on. Despite the many challenges, it would become a bestselling title that had beautiful imagery and flowed so well, that it was made into a film that won Academy Awards.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a work in which Jean-Dominique Bauby bears witness to a fierce determination to continue living his life despite being locked in a paralyzed body.
He explains the deep sadness and joy of listening to his father on the phone, seeing his children, and imagining one day traveling to an exotic location and lying next to the woman he loved. Feeding through a tube, he imagines making and tasting a range of cuisines, even as he keeps in touch with life around him and himself.
