I have started treating J.M. Dalgliesh’s books like a game. A year ago, I was more than happy to scoff at people who spent every crime fiction novel they read trying to unmask the killer. I couldn’t see the point.
Crime fiction was just like every other genre. The author wrote a story that took you on a ride. You were expected to enjoy it, not to engage it directly, matching wits with the killer in an effort to determine his identity before the hero found him.
This attitude vanished when I started reading Dalgliesh’s novels. I attempted to decipher the killer’s identity and got it completely wrong. It was frustrating. But I also had fun, which is why I’ve finally crossed over. I get why people do this.
It isn’t quite as distracting as I assumed. And for his part, Dalgliesh should be commended for creating compelling mysteries.
Wow, just finished Blood Runs Cold-it was great. I love the whole Hidden Norfolk series, but had to give the last book a 9 rating-really, really good. The characters are enjoyable and likable. I do hope there are more to the series, as I will miss the team. Looking forward to the new series Misty Isle.
