Ingrid Betancourt is better known as a Colombian politician and activist who was held hostage for years by the Marxist guerillas in her home country. When she was ultimately rescued in 2008, the news made headlines across the globe.
Betancourt holds both Colombian and French citizenship and spent much of her childhood in Paris where her father worked with UNESCO. She got married to French diplomat Fabrice Delloye in 1983 and moved back to Colombia in the late 1980s to run for Congress and won.
Right from the get-go, Ingrid Betancourt was very outspoken against corruption and this resulted in death threats that she had to send her children to live with her ex-husband in New Zealand. In 1998, she won an overwhelming majority and was elected to the Senate on the
Green Oxygen Party.
In 2002, Ingrid Betancourt was campaigning in southern Colombia and ventured into rebel-held territory. She was unfortunate enough to be taken hostage by the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia when they were stopped at a roadblock. She was ultimately rescued in a daring mission in 2008.
Ingrid Betancourt reunited with her family in Bogota, Colombia, and then flew to Paris where she was knighted in the
Legion of Honor and hailed as a symbol of hope. In 2022, she announced that she would once again be going back to Colombia and running for the presidency.
Betancourt’s first rodeo in writing was when she published
Until Death Do Us Part in 1989.
It tells of a woman who gave up safety and comfort to run for leadership in a country destroyed by hopelessness, terrorism, fear, and violence. With a few of the elites taking everything, criminals making policy, and political assassinations rampant, she is determined to change her country no matter what.
Ingrid published her first fiction novel
The Blue Line in 2014. The novel tells the story of Julia who falls in love with a handsome revolutionary. But then their lives are upended upon the return of military dictator and former president Juan Peron to Argentina. She is just coming of age when she has to confront the realities of military dictatorships and the chaos that comes with it.
In 2008, Ingrid Betancourt ventured into short stories and published her first
Letters to My Mother. It tells of a twelve-page letter Betancourt wrote to her family while in captivity under the FARC rebels. For the most part, it is an impassioned declaration of love to family and friends.
