I like Helen Phifer. She understands that readers are not detectives. She doesn’t bog her police procedurals down with annoying details. She understands that some of us read police procedurals because we want interesting human stories.

And that is what she endeavors to deliver. Characters like Brookes and Harwin are relatable because they are just people. Yes, they have analytical brains, and they can solve a puzzle better than most.

But at the end of the day, they are human beings with human problems. They have friends, family, neighbors, and lovers they relate to daily, not to mention ordinary challenges they must overcome.

Don’t get me wrong. The mysteries are great. But in this case, the human stories are a bigger deal.
