Harry grew up on his parents’ ranch in Santa Clarita, and they had cattle and horses. This family ranch of his was later turned into a historic park by Los Angeles County and was named Tesoro Adobe Park.
During World War II, he served 6 years in the US Navy, as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class in the Pacific War. But he got transferred back to the United States against his own wishes to serve with his dad’s good friend, John Ford, in a Naval photographic unit attached to the OSS. Then he helped make training films for the OSS and Navy.
He tried a singing career to avoid acting however was not successful. He started acting in the John Ford Stock Company with his dad. Harry was a frequent collaborator with John Ford, a close friend. Harry became a respected character actor just like his dad, appearing in a number of Westerns. He appeared in 4 Howard Hawks films, and was in a total of 9 John Wayne movies.

After Harry Sr. died in 1947, John Ford cast Harry, Jr. in the role of The Abilene Kid in the movie. Ford and the older Carey had filmed an earlier version of this story, and John dedicated the Technicolor remake to the man’s memory.
