Harry Bernstein
Harry Bernstein (Harry Louis Bernstein) was born on May 30th, 1910. Harry passed away June 3rd, 2011 at 101 years old. Harry Bernstein was born in Stockport, England.
Harry Bernstein was a man who was better known as a journalist earlier in life but would then become known for his very popular memoirs.
The son of Polish immigrants, Harry Bernstein lived in a house full of abuse as his father tyrannized his mother and the children. As such, Harry learned everything about love from his mother and everything about hate from his father.
While he was in preparatory school, one of his teachers told him he would never become an architect which was the one thing he wanted to become. Bernstein pivoted to writing and began writing for the school magazine. Even at that very young age, he was so confident that he believed it was only a matter of time before he was writing for
The Sun-Times.
When Harry Bernstein moved to New York, he started publishing his stories in the likes of
The Anvil and literary magazines such as
Literary America and
Story. Since he did not find much success with his novel, he found work at
Columbia Pictures as a script reader.
In 1935, Harry tried to make a living working as a freelance writer as he sold his works to the likes of
Family Circle,
Popular Mechanics, and
The Daily News. He would end up an editor of the construction trade magazine
Home of Tomorrow.
When his wife died in 2002, he found himself unoccupied and too lonely and began writing his magnum opus
The Invisible Wall. While he initially got a bunch of rejections, it was ultimately published by Hutchinson in the United Kingdom and Ballantine Books in the US.
The Invisible Wall is a work that Harry Bernstein published in 2006. It is the story of Harry’s life right from his childhood when his family struggled to make ends meet. Things were hard enough with his father spending all his earnings on gambling and drinking, but they get worse when his sister falls in love with a Christian boy from the neighborhood.
In
The Dream, Harry Bernstein chronicles the bitter and hard years of his youth in England. But at twelve years old, they get tickets to travel to the US sent to them by an anonymous benefactor. Suddenly, they believe they can achieve some prosperity only to arrive at the reality of the mafia in Chicago, the
Great Depression, lost family members and shattered dreams.
The Golden Willow is a different kind of book from Harry’s previous novels that focused on his childhood. The work tells of his life with Ruby his wife in a marriage that lasted for nearly seven decades. From their meeting to their early life in poverty in the Upper West Side to moving to the suburbs, it is the ultimate achievement of the American dream.
