Greg Iles has written some outstanding series though I have always felt that his best works are his standalone novels.
The Natchez Burning trilogy is definitely my best work of all his series and I believe one needs to start with it before reading the larger and more popular Penn Cage series of novels.
I began reading the series with The Quiet Game and in between read the short novella The Death Factory before reading The Devil’s Punchbowl.
Still I believe his standalones such as Cemetery Road and Third Degree are better than the best series by Greg. This list of books provides a breakdown of Greg Iles best novels that I love to read.
You won’t catch me reading Greg Iles’ work on a bad day. I remember reading the final pages of ‘Natchez Burning’ in bed shortly before I slept. I closed the book, breathed a sigh of relief, and thought about all the fortunate coincidences that had brought Iles to my attention.
I was blown away, and I couldn’t believe that an author of Iles’ caliber had escaped my attention for so many years. But then I thought back to ‘The Quiet Game,’ the first book in the Penn Cage series, and I noticed a pattern.
Iles is not afraid to wade into dark waters. His books are incredibly heavy. He wouldn’t be my go-to if I wanted uplifting fiction. That being said, he’s a gifted writer.
Thoroughly enjoyed Cemetery Road , my only sampling of his work. I have Third Degree and True Evil lined up, but haven’t made the time yet. Given the other comments here, I should.
Greg might be my favorite author. He blends the history that we were not taught in school with an immersive storyline that just pulls you in. Some of his books are massive, and when I was done, I was ready to reread it for fear of forgetting any of the plot!
I just tried to read Black Cross and couldn’t finish it. Too long, too contrived, didn’t hold my attention. Not one of his best books, which is too bad as I really like his books.
I have just finished it and while it was a tough go to get past the first 5-6 chapters it is a fantastic read,,give it a second try
