Gottlob Herbert Bidermann was a soldier who fought in the
Second World War and would then become known for his memoirs such as the 1995 published

Gottlob fought on the Eastern Front during World War II as a member of the
132nd Infantry Division of Germany for much of the War. He was part of the
Army Group South for two years until 1943 before he was reassigned to
Army Group North, which fought around Leningrad in Russia until 1945.
Bidermann served with an anti-tank battalion known as
PanzerJager, which was part of the 132nd during the War. He was a specialist with the 37mm anti-tank gun before he got a commission in 1943 which got him transferred to the infantry.
When Germany surrendered in May 1945, Bidermann found himself trapped in Lithuania’s Courland pocket with a German infantry division. Following the end of the war, he became a prisoner of war in Russia where he spent three years.
Gottlob Bidermann would ultimately retire from the military and find a career in the textile industry. He made his home in Southern Germany for the remainder of his life.
In 1995, Gottlob Herbert Biderman published his very popular memoir
In Deadly Combat. It is a work in which he chronicles his experiences and those of countless other prisoners of war held in Russia. He also tells of the beginning of his service as a soldier and the ravages of the war on peasants who were caught between ruthless antagonists.
He recalls receiving gingerbread as a Christmas gift from home while he was on the front which for a moment made him forget the devastation of battle. He also recalls the humiliation of surrendering to a once-derided enemy, even as he offers an insightful glimpse into what life was like in a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp.
