With Europe becoming too hot during the 1930s, Bernanos moved to Brazil in 1938 where he settled with his family on a farm in Minas Gerais. Writing from Brazil, Georges mocked the
Vichy Regime in France and strongly supported Charles De Gaulle and the
Free French.
After the end of
World War II, Georges Bernanos got an invitation to go back home from Charles De Gaulle who offered him a government post. Bernanos accepted the invitation but in France, he was disappointed that the renewal he was hoping for was not evident and hence he refused De Gaulle’s offer to enter political life.

The Impostor in which he tells the story of Father Cenabre, a controversial priest and historian of mysticism who is tormented when he loses his faith. Luckily, there is a humble priest who is determined to save Father Cenabre, even though he knows his dark secret.
