Dune was adapted into a miniseries for the Sci Fi Channel in 2000. Frank Herbert's Dune starred Alec Newman as Paul Atreides, William Hurt as Duke Leto, and Saskia Reeves as Lady Jessica. The miniseries won two Emmy Awards in 2001 for Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a miniseries or movie. The miniseries was also nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing. Frank Herbert's Dune made very few changes to the original novel.
Dune Messiah and Children of Dune were adapted in a sequel miniseries in 2003 titled Frank Herbert's Children of Dune. The new series added James McAvoy as Leto II Atreides and Susan Sarandon as Princess Wensicia to the cast. The series was nominated for three Emmy Awards and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects.
The two miniseries were big time ratings successes and are two of the three highest-rated to be broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel.
After the success of the 2021 Dune film, production began on a spinoff series set in the Dune Universe titled Dune: The Sisterhood. Dune was first adapted in 1984 for a film by director David Lynch. There were numerous attempts to adapt the novel beginning in 1971 and it was finally done by Lynch who also wrote the screenplay. The cast featured Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides alongside Patrick Stewart, Dean Stockwell, Virginia Madsen, Sting, and others. The soundtrack for Dune was done by the band Toto.
It was originally planned as three films, but the lack of success of the first film canceled those plans. The film has since received a bit of a cult following and has its fans.
Dune was then adapted in 2021 into a film by Denis Villeneuve. The film covers the first half of the book and was far more successful than the previous version. It was a major box office success and received ten Academy Award nominations, winning the awards for Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography. The cast features Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho.
The second half of the book has been adapted into the film Dune: Part Two, also directed by Denis Villeneuve.
