Ernesto Che Guevara

Ernesto Che Guevara was born on June 14th, 1928. Ernesto passed away October 9th, 1967 at 39 years old. Ernesto Che Guevara was born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina.

Ernesto Che Guevara was an Argentine physician, author, diplomat, guerrilla leader, Marxist revolutionary, and military theorist. He was a major figure of the Cuban Revolution, his stylized visage has become such a ubiquitous counter culture symbol of rebellion and is a global insignia in pop culture.

While he was a young medical student, he traveled through South America and he was appalled by the hunger, poverty, and disease that he witnessed. His burgeoning desire to help overturn what he viewed as the capitalist exploitation of Latin America by America prompted his involvement in Guatemala’s social reform.

While in Mexico City, he met Fidel and Raul Castro, and joined their 26th of July Movement, and sailed to Cuba on the yacht Granma with the intent of overthrowing Fulgenico Batista (US backed dictator). He quickly rose to prominence among the insurgents, got promoted to second-in-command, and played a vital role in the 2 year long guerrilla campaign which deposed the Batista regime.

After the Cuban Revolution, he played crucial roles in the new government. These included revealing appeals and death sentences for those that were convicted as war criminals during the revolutionary tribunals, instituting agrarian land reform as minister of industries, serving as President of National Bank and instructional director for Cuba’s armed forces, and helping spearhead a successful nationwide literacy campaign. He also traversed the globe as a diplomat on behalf of Cuban socialism.

Che left Cuba in 1965 in order to foment continental revolutions across South America and Africa, first unsuccessfully in Congo-Kinshasa and later in Bolivia, where he got captured by CIA-assisted Bolivian forces and was summarily executed.

To this day, he is a reviled and revered historical figure, polarized in the collective imagination in a multitude of memoirs, biographies, essays, songs, films, and documentaries. As a result from his perceived martyrdom, poetic invocations for class struggle, and the desire to create consciousness of a new man driven by moral instead of material incentives, he’s evolved into a quintessential icon for various leftist movements.

Time listed him as being one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Guerrilla Warfare has become the guidebook for thousands of guerrilla fighters in various countries all around the world. Che intended for it to be a manual on guerrilla fighting, as inspiration for revolutionary movements in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, stressing the need for an underpinning political motivation to guerrilla methods, supply, and organization.

Che emphasizes that guerrilla warfare is a favorable method against totalitarian regime, where political opposition and legal civil struggle is impossible to conduct.
