Is there any author that does a better job of writing about ordinary people and their trials than Elizabeth Berg? I vaguely remember skimming the synopsis for ‘Open House’ and thinking, ‘Urgh, this again?’

I had read too many novels about women whose husbands had suddenly abandoned them. I did not care. But Berg quickly proved that she deserved my trust by taking the story in an interesting direction.

Yes, the themes were familiar, but the story and characters were incredibly engaging. I’m on my third Berg novel so far, and ‘The Story of Arthur Truluv’ is somehow even better than the previous books. Berg can do no wrong.
